Introduction
Artificial intelligence can support many tasks in adult education, such as preparing learning materials, drafting feedback, adapting content or organising information, among many other uses. However, AI use also brings important ethical and safety questions. These questions are especially relevant in education, where AI-supported outputs may affect people’s learning experiences, confidence, opportunities and privacy.
This module focuses on responsible and safe AI use in adult education settings. It is designed for educators, administrative staff, coordinators, managers, and other professionals who want to use AI tools or support AI-related decisions in their organisation.
Ethical AI use does not mean avoiding AI completely. It means using AI with care, understanding its limits and making sure that human judgement remains central. Staff need to be able to recognise possible risks, such as bias, inaccurate outputs, privacy issues, over-reliance, unclear responsibility or unsuitable uses of AI in assessment and learner support.
Throughout this module, you will explore key ethical and safety issues connected to AI use in education. You will learn how to review AI outputs for fairness and inclusion, protect learner data, communicate AI use transparently, maintain human oversight, understand high-risk and unacceptable AI uses and support responsible learner use of AI.
Module structure
This module includes seven units:
1. Why Ethics and Safety Matter in AI-Supported Education
Introduces ethical AI use, human-centered AI, common risks, and shared responsibility.
2. Bias, Fairness and Inclusion
Explores how AI bias can appear, why fairness matters in adult education and how staff can review AI outputs for inclusion.
3. Privacy, Data Protection and Responsible Data Use
Focuses on learner data, sensitive information, GDP-aware practice, safe prompting and responsible use of AI tools.
4. Transparency, Accountability and Human Oversight
Explains when AI use should be disclosed, who remains responsible and why human review is essential.
5. High-Risk and Unacceptable AI Uses in Education
Introduces AI risk levels, high-risk uses in education and AI practices that are prohibited or unsuitable in learning contexts.
6. Academic Integrity and Responsible Learner Use
Looks at plagiarism, authorship, AI declarations, limits of AI detection and how to guide learners towards responsible AI use.
7. Practical Ethical Check for Educators and Staff
Guides you through a practical checklist for reviewing one AI use case before it is used in teaching, learner support, communication, assessment or organisational work, among other uses.
By the end of this module, you should be able to identify key ethical risks in AI-supported education, apply basic safety and data protection checks, review AI outputs more critically, explain AI use more transparently and, in general, make more responsible decisions about when and how AI should be used.
