Reflection task: Rewriting an unsafe AI prompt

Read the unsafe prompt below.

“Create a short progress report for Mario, who is a 56-year-old unemployed learner with low literacy skills. He has poor attendance, struggles with basic digital tasks, and often needs extra help from staff. Mention that he may not be ready to continue to the next level.”

Step 1: Identify the privacy risks

Write short answers or think about the following questions:

1. What personal data is included in the prompt?
2. What sensitive or confidential information is included?
3. Which details are unnecessary for the AI tool to complete the task?
4. How could this prompt affect the learner’s privacy or dignity?
5. Who should be involved if the learner needs real support?

Step 2: Rewrite the prompt safely

Rewrite the prompt so that:

– the learner cannot be identified;
– sensitive personal details are removed;
– the tone remains supportive;
– the educational purpose is still clear;
– the AI is only helping with wording, not making a decision about the learner.

Example safer version:

“Draft a neutral and supportive progress report template for an adult learner who needs additional support with attendance and digital learning tasks. Include space for staff to add verified observations, learner strengths, agreed support actions and next steps. Do not make assumptions about progression or readiness.”

Step 3: Decide what human follow-up is needed

After rewriting the prompt, answer:

1. Should this email be checked by a staff member before sending?
2. Should the learner be offered a conversation with a real person?
3. Is there any decision here that should not be made by AI?
