The AI-ADU Competency Frameworks for Adult Educators and Administrative Staff are now available for download in English, Greek, Lithuanian, and Italian.
Developed collaboratively across four European countries, the frameworks support adult education professionals and organisations in understanding, integrating and leading with artificial intelligence. They offer a practical roadmap for developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to navigate digital transformation confidently and ethically.

From concept to frameworks
The frameworks were created through an inclusive, research-based process that combined expert input with the lived experiences of adult education professionals.
A first round of focus groups gathered insights from educators, trainers, and administrative staff about their expectations, challenges, and needs related to AI. These discussions shaped the structure and content of the frameworks.
A second round of focus groups was then held to validate the draft versions. Participants reviewed the clarity, relevance, and applicability of the materials, helping refine both the language and design. This participatory approach ensured that the frameworks respond directly to the realities of today’s adult learning environments.
Structure
Each framework is organised around five interconnected modules:
- Technical and data literacy
- Pedagogical and practical applications of AI
- AI for organisational processes and management
- Ethical considerations and safe use of AI
- Leadership and advocacy for digital transformation
The progression through three levels (Explorer, Practitioner, and Innovator) allows users to identify their current level and plan their development.
Purpose
The frameworks were created to help people working in adult education understand what AI means for their daily work and how to grow their skills step by step. They translate complex ideas about artificial intelligence into practical guidance that anyone, regardless of their technical background, can use.
For educators, the framework can serve as a map for professional growth: a way to reflect on your current level of confidence with AI tools and plan what to learn next.
For organisations and training centres, it offers a shared reference point to plan staff training, guide digital strategies and support teams in using AI in ethical and effective ways.
